PLEASANT HILL, Calif. — Education workforce housing, school fund investment activities, and an update on the progress about students and reading intervention strategies at Mt. McKinley School are on the agenda for the September 13, 2023, Contra Costa County Board of Education meeting.
Additionally, new Student Board members will be introduced and the Board will consider resolutions in support of Disability Awareness Month, Filipino American History Month, and LGBTQ+ History Month. The Rotary Club of San Ramon Valley will be recognized as an Education Champion and the Board will hold a public hearing about textbooks and instructional materials at CCCOE schools.

BOARD MEETING AGENDA RECOGNITIONS & HIGHLIGHTS:
Student Board Members: Two new student Board members, Sophia Nguyen and Daphne Milich will be introduced at the beginning of the Board of Education meeting. The student Board members will serve on the Board for the 2023-24 school year.
Resolution #04-23/24 - Disability Awareness Month: The Contra Costa County Board of Education proclaims October 2023 as Disability Awareness Month. The Board encourages educational communities to recognize Disability Awareness by highlighting individuals and groups who have made progress to enhance the knowledge, perceptions, and understandings of disabilities.
Resolution #05-23/24 - Filipino American History Month: The Contra Costa County Board of Education issues a resolution in honor of Filipino American History Month for October 2023. The Board encourages educational communities to recognize Filipino American History Month by highlighting Filipino American individuals and groups who have contributed to the history and culture of California and the United States.
Resolution #06-23/24 - LGBTQ+ History Month: The Contra Costa County Board of Education recognizes the Month of October 2023 as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, Intersex, Asexual/Agender (LGBTQIA+) History Month. The Board encourages a warm, welcoming, and safe environment for LGBTQIA+ students, staff, families, and caregivers in school communities. LGBTQIA+ History Month is a time to remember the important roles LGBTQIA+ people have in shaping the social, historical, legal, and political world we live in today.
Education Champion Recognition: The Rotary Club of San Ramon Valley will be recognized as the CCCOE Education Champion for September 2023. This reward is for the club’s sponsorship of the Scripps Regional Spelling Bee for the Bay Area.
Williams Uniform Complaint Report: The Williams Uniform Complaint Quarterly Report is submitted to the Business Services Department four times per year to document any complaints filed against the County Office as an LEA, or any school within the LEA, in compliance with California Education Code 35186. For the quarter ending on June 30, 2023, there were no complaints filed in any of the areas for any school within the Contra Costa County Office of Education Student Programs Department.
Public Hearing: A public hearing regarding the availability of textbooks and instructional materials at CCCOE schools will take place. The governing boards of school districts and county offices of education are required to duly notice and hold an annual public hearing to determine whether each pupil in the district/county has sufficient textbooks and/or instructional materials in specified subjects that are aligned to the academic content standards and consistent with content and cycles of the curriculum frameworks adopted by the State Board of Education.
Reading Intervention Supports: Principal of Mt. McKinley schools will update the Board on specific data, reading supports processes, improvements, areas to expand, case studies, and the 2023-2024 school year areas of focus.
Charter Schools: An update will be presented on CCCBOE-authorized charter schools.
County School Service Fund (CSSF) Investment Activities: The Treasury Report will show a portfolio summary of CSSF investments and agency funding data for the quarter ending June 30, 2023.
Passive Park Update: An update will be given to the Board regarding the construction of a park located adjacent to the Agency’s Stewart Building in Pleasant Hill, CA.
Policy Standing Committee: Proposed changes and updates to Board Policies as recommended by the Policy Standing Committee will be presented to the Board for information and action items.
Education Workforce Housing: A report will be given about Education Workforce Housing and a discussion by the Board will follow.

One of 58 counties in California, Contra Costa County has the 11th largest public-school student population in the state (approximately 169,225 students). Officially established in 1932, CCCOE has a long history of providing direct services to some of our county's most vulnerable students, including young people who are incarcerated, homeless, or in foster care, as well as students who have severe physical or emotional challenges.
