The Contra Costa County’s Board of Education selected Mike Maxwell to serve as its president for the next year at the Board’s annual reorganization meeting on December 13, 2023. This is Maxwell’s third time being selected to lead the Board. Board Member Anamarie Avila Farias will serve as Vice President.

Maxwell succeeds Board Member Consuelo Lara, who served in the position in 2023.

As president, Maxwell will preside over County Board meetings, work with the Superintendent of Schools to prepare meeting agendas, appoint, form and dissolve committees subject to County Board approval, and represent the County Board as a spokesperson.

Maxwell was first elected to the Board in 2014 and represents Area 4 (Blackhawk, Clayton, Danville, San Ramon, and parts of Alamo and Concord).

Farias was first elected in 2020 and represents Area 3 (Bay Point, Clyde, Crockett, Hercules, Martinez, Pacheco, Pleasant Hill, Pittsburg, Port Costa, Rodeo, and parts of El Sobrante).

The Contra Costa County Board of Education works with the County Superintendent of Schools, Lynn Mackey, to provide leadership, service, and support to 286 schools and 18 school districts throughout the county. There are approximately 169,225 students in Contra Costa County and the Board strives to advocate for all learners, no matter their education level, learning style, economic status, gender, race, or disability.
