Free Online Literacy Courses for California Educators
Contra Costa County Office of Education and their partners have developed free online courses to support all educators with literacy instruction. Courses include:

• Literacy as Equity (from TNTP)
• Executive Functions and Literacy (from The Center for Whole-Child Education)
• Reading Foundational Skills (from TNTP)
• Comprehension and Knowledge Building (from TNTP)
• Intensive Intervention and Data Based Individualization (from National Center on Intensive Intervention)

Earn Continuing Education units through University of the Pacific by completing all five courses and logging additional hours. More details here.

About Project ARISE:

Project ARISE focuses on providing professional learning for K-12 educators statewide to support students with disabilities, students with dyslexia, multilingual learners, and students who are dually identified. Topics of professional development will include intensive literacy interventions, the Science of Reading, support for executive functioning, celebration of diversity, asset-based approach, and pedagogy of equity and family involvement.

About the RII Grant Program:

Assembly Bill 130, Section 145 (Statutes of 2021) of the Education Omnibus Trailer Bill authorized the Reading Instruction and Intervention (RII) Grant Program to generate and disseminate professional learning opportunities for kindergarten through grade twelve (K-12) educators in the areas of evidence-based literacy, intensive literacy interventions, and support of pupils' executive functioning skills. Funds are available through 2025-2026.

Grant period: November 1, 2022- March 30, 2026

The California Department of Education (CDE), in consultation with the California Collaborative for Educational Excellence (CCEE), awarded $9.8 million to Contra Costa County Office of Education and partners to develop and provide professional learning to educators in public schools serving K-12 students,  and to strengthen reading instruction for all pupils in a manner that aligns with the Statewide System of Support and the California Comprehensive State Literacy Plan.
