The Contra Costa Office of Education Suicide Prevention and Intervention Policy and Protocol (2023-2024)

The Contra Costa Office of Education has developed a comprehensive Suicide Prevention and Intervention Policy and Protocol. These prevention and intervention guidelines are designed for schools to have procedures in place to prevent suicide, assist student who are at risk of suicide, and intervene and respond appropriately in suicide-related crisis. This can serve as a resource for other districts and agencies in the development of their suicide prevention and intervention efforts.

Model School District Policy on Suicide Prevention: Model Language, Commentary, and Resources 

This document outlines model policies and best practices for school practices for school districts to follow to protect the health and safety of all students. This document was developed by examining strong local policies, ensuring that they are in line with the latest research in the field of suicide prevention, and identifying best practices for a national network. The model is comprehensive, yet the policy language is modular and may be used to draft your own district policy based upon the unique needs of your district.

Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration - Preventing Suicide: A Toolkit for High Schools
Preventing Suicide: A Toolkit for High Schools was funded by the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA) to help high schools, school districts, and their partners designed and implement strategies to prevent suicide and promote behavioral health among their students.

Heard Alliance - K12 Toolkit for Mental Health Promotion and Suicide Prevention
This is an older (2017-2018) toolkit which was developed in consultation with national experts, including school-based administration and staff, clinicians, researchers, and crisis response professionals. It provides guidance and tools for postvention, a term used to describe activities that help people cope with the emotional distress resulting from a suicide and prevent additional trauma that could lead to further suicidal behavior and deaths, especially among people who are vulnerable.
